ECE students Michael Mitchell (right) and Daniel Kotovsky (left) just completed work on a VLF (3-30 kHz) receiver and antenna (shown in the picture) at Palmer Station, Antarctica.  The two PhD students are working on VLF research with Prof. Robert Moore, focusing on the energetic and electrodynamic coupling of lightning energy to the lower ionosphere and upper mesosphere (~60-120 km altitude).

Dr. Jenshan Lin has been appointed the next Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques.

The Audio Engineering Society received the Best Society Social Event award for their Flavet Festival which was held Feb 22, 2013. Co-sponsors of the event were the Reitz Union Board Entertainment and the Benton Engineering Council. The event consisted of 3 live bands at Flavet Field; Painted Space, Flat Land, and Far Away Planes. The Audio Engineering Society set up the concert from top to bottom, and ran the whole thing. Along with the concert, there were lots of field events consisting of games, engineering challenges, soccer and Frisbee games, snow cones and cotton candy, La Lola Loca food truck, tabling from various other organizations, i.e. American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Society of Women Engineers, and Engineers Without Borders all with displays of their awesome work.

Dr. Alan George served as the keynote speaker at the Military and Aerospace Programmable Logic Devices (MAPLD) conference held in San Diego, CA, on April 10-12, 2013. The title of the keynote was "The Forthcoming Renaissance in Reconfigurable Space Computing."

Dr. Yuguang "Michael" Fang has been selected as the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology.

Dr. Vladimir A. Rakov was appointed a Member of the Group that re-evaluated the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Position Statement on Lightning Safety . The Group has completed its work, and the resultant statement is found here.

Dr. David Arnold was selected as one of four recipients of the 2012-13 Doctoral Dissertation Advisor/Mentoring Award by the College of Engineering.  This award encourages and rewards excellence, innovation and effectiveness in mentoring doctoral students through their final dissertation. May 4, 2013.

Dr. Vladimir Rakov gave an Invited Lecture “Fundamentals of Lightning” at the African Regional Training Programme on Lightning Protection, Entebbe, Uganda, February  4-8, 2013. He also participated in establishing the African Centre for Lightning Information and Research - ACLIR.

Andrew Milluzzi, a PhD student under Dr. Alan George, participated in a panel discussion at DesignCom 2013, January 28-30 in Santa Clara, California. Read the article here.
